FRANCE: LA CROIX ABOUT THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION, "MAYBE A WARNING" FOR SARKOZY

"Maybe a warning" for Sarkozy: in this way, in the leading article on the French catholic newspaper "La Croix", Dominique Gerbaud interprets the results of the first round of the municipal election held on 9th March in France, where the Socialist party and its allies won quite a few regional capitals. While waiting for the second ballot next Sunday, Gerbaud said that the vote expressed "the bad mood, the annoyance of part of the right", and while this "does not cost too much in terms of strengths", it costs "much more in terms of image". While the rightist voters seemed to be "poorly motivated", "the left took action and seems able to regain part of the cities it had lost in 2001". "The flight of votes from the moderate right is faster than one could imagine – comments the writer –. This right is unable for the moment to propose any alternative", but "maybe the municipal election rings like a warning. Perhaps a turning point, with the need expressed by a different right that points out its substantial (fewer changes in society and more structural reforms) and formal differences (for a different ethics of politics)". Sarkozy "had announced he would have learnt a lesson from the message of the French – concludes Gerbaud -. Now we will see how he reacts".
