EU: LENARÈIÈ (COUNCIL), "THE THREE PRIORITIES OF THE SPRING SUMMIT"

A new stage in the Strategy of Lisbon, the energy question, climate changes, and stability of financial markets: Janez Lenarèiè, Slovenian Secretary of State for European Affairs, submitted the European Parliament and the Commission, meeting in Strasbourg, the priorities of the European Union summit scheduled for tomorrow and Friday. The spring summit was dedicated to the economic and social subjects, and "this time, it happens in a moment in which the international economy is seeking answers". "The fundamentals of community Europe are good – explained the representative of the current presidency of the Council -, but the turbulences of financial markets generated instability. Furthermore, foreign competition is growing, and the European Union cannot just look on". Therefore, here is "urgency for revision" of the Strategy of Lisbon, whose objective is "economy based on knowledge". "It is necessary to bet on the so-called freedom", explained Janez Lenarèiè: apart from "historical" freedoms relating to movement of people, goods, capitals and services, "it is necessary to let researchers and knowledge move freely; it is also necessary to increase innovation. In this way, we shall be able to support small and medium-sized enterprises, creating occupation", the essential step for social cohesion.
