ENVIRONMENT: EUROBAROMETER, "THE CITIZENS ASK FOR GLOBAL ANSWERS TO GLOBAL PROBLEMS"

” “"The majority of the citizens state that the EU should do more for the environment and that it would be preferable to adopt" EU-wide actions and policies, thus giving "global answers to global problems". The MEP Stavros Dimas comments the survey conducted by Eurobarometer, which was disclosed yesterday in Brussels and which shows that "over 95% of the interviewees feel that it is important to protect the environment and approximately 80% think it affects the quality of life". According to the findings disclosed by Eurobarometer, "the five issues the citizens are most worried about are climate change, water and atmospheric pollution, catastrophes of human origin, and the use of chemicals in products for daily use". 58% of the sample say they are concerned about the use of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), versus 21% who are in favour. Over 60% of the interviewees say they are willing to buy organic products, even if they are more expensive, but only 17% confirm they already have. "Asked whether the protection of the environment is an obstacle to economic growth, nearly two thirds of the Europeans (63%) answer that the protection of the environment is more of an incentive to innovation than an obstacle to development". ” “
