THE WAY OF THE CROSS: CARD. ZEN ZE-KIUN, THE POPE’S "ATTENTION" TO ASIA, ESPECIALLY CHINA

"When His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, through the Most Eminent Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, asked me to prepare the meditattions for the Way of the Cross of Holy Friday this year, at the Coliseum, I had no hesitation accepting the task. I understood that, with that gesture, the Holy Father meant to show his attention to the big Asian continent and in particular to involve in this solemn exercise of Christian pity the faithful of China, for whom the Way of the Cross is a very deeply-felt devotion. The Pope wanted me to take to the Coliseum the voice of those distant brothers and sisters". In this way, cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun, Salesian, bishop of Hong-Kong, presents the meditations and the prayers he has composed for the Pope’s Way of the Cross at the Coliseum (21 March, 21.15h). "Certainly – writes the cardinal in the presentation of the texts –, the protagonist of this Way of Sorrows is Our Lord Jesus Christ, as He is presented to us by the Gospels and by the tradition of the Church. But behind Him there are many people of the past and present, there is us". (continued)
