EU: AWARD FOR EUROPEAN STUDENTS ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA

"The African countries are facing some of the biggest challenges in the developing world about climate change, water and energy". The Commissioner for humanitarian aids, Louis Michel, recalls the themes of the 2008 Development Award for young people aged 16 to 18. The deadline for the award is 31st March. The Award "is open to schools in the 27 EU member states; the central theme of this year is Africa – Sustainable Development". Three are the subjects of the award: climate change; water and energy; sustainable tourism. All entries shall be composed of two parts: a short message and an artistic work, either a poster or a multimedia presentation. For terms and conditions plus all entries received so far (nearly 600 posters and 110 videos), visit www.dyp2007.org. According to Michel, "the award may help raise the awareness of young people, families, teachers" about sustainable development. Winners of the first and second place in each country will win a trip in Brussels. The final award is a journey to Africa for the winners and their teachers, including "visits to EU projects for cooperation in the development of educational schemes".
