EUROMED: ATHENS, ASSEMBLY OF THE MEDITERRANEAN ON ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

"The two coasts of the Mediterranean must join forces to protect the environment". In addition, "the development of new technology for clean energy must be pursued and expanded", not least "to improve energy effectiveness". Hans-Gert Poettering, president of the EU Parliament, who is about to leave for Athens, makes a statement on the fourth plenary meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Assembly, which he will attend in the Greek capital tomorrow. The main items on the agenda will be energy sources, environmental protection and climate change. The meeting will also be attended by the Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, the president of the EU Commission José Manuel Barroso, the presidents of the Tunisian (Fouad Mebazaa), Hellenic assembly (Dimitrios Sioufas) and Egyptian assemblies (Ahmed Fathi Sorour) and the Council of Europe (Lluís Maria de Puig). During the meeting (the assembly is composed of 120 MPs from European countries and 120 from non-EU countries; it includes 37 states and is the only body in which Israeli and Palestinian members sit together), Euromed will also renew the Bureau’s appointments.
