BISHOP KIDNAPPED IN IRAQ: MSGR. SLEIMAN (BAGHDAD), "WE ARE WAITING FOR SOMETHING NEW TODAY"

"There are have been no news until now. We are waiting to know something new today". The expectation atmosphere concerning the kidnapping of the Mosul archbishop, Msgr. Rahho, was confirmed to SIR by the Latin bishop of Baghdad, Msgr. Jean Benjamin Sleiman. The bishop has been in the hands of his kidnappers since February 29th. "No-one has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping – declared the bishop, – but we suppose some fundamentalists, maybe Sunnis, operated in that area. In the Iraqi vision of matters, the Christians are identified with occupants. If those who perform some gestures had knew to what extent the American policy is opposed by Christian classes, perhaps they wouldn’t have fulfilled such act. Unfortunately, the Iraqi tribal mentality mixes up everything and everybody". "They talked about violence reduction – he concluded, – but violence just moved elsewhere. Facts of the kind bring us back to the Christian sentiments of abandonment and loneliness. Just think that there were no condemnations of the kidnapping by European governments".
