MARCH EIGHT: EUROSTAT DATA ON EU WOMEN. THE AGE OF NEW MUMS IS INCREASING

"A higher percentage of men follow sports events, while a higher proportion of women go to theatres or read books". Eurostat depicted the Europe of the two sexes before March Eight, confirming well-known trends, but supplying also a few new "key to the reading" trends on the changes within the populations of the twenty-seven European member states. In the survey made known in Brussels, it is said that "the hope for life of women is 80.9 years" (2006 datum), "while for men it is just 74.6 years". The higher hope for life, for women, is evident in Spain and France (84.4 years). The lowest one is in Romania (76.2 years). On the other hand, the marriage average age is going on growing: for women it is 28.1 years and for men it is 30.6 in the European Union. The average age for the birth of the first child exceeded 28 years long ago, but with different situations depending on countries: it goes from 24 years for the Bulgarian; Rumanian and Lithuanian new mums, to about 30 years of the British, Spanish and German new mums. A particular datum was given by Eurostat in relation to employment (working women have much lower percentages than those of men): "About 70% of teachers in primary and secondary schools are women, while over 60% of university teachers are men".
