SPAIN: JOC, YOUNG WOMEN GET LOWER WAGES WITH RESPECT TO MEN

"Most of women work in the sector of services, with fixed-term contracts and lower wages with respect to men". It is from a survey by the Christian Youth Workers (Juventud Obrera Cristiana or JOC) of Spain. In a note on the Women’s Day, JOC confirmed that "equality of men and women is a fundamental right" which must be "legally acknowledged" as well as "effectively exercised". ” “According to the statistics of the Youth Employment Watchdog of the Spanish Youth Council, young women suffer from an unemployment rate of 15.2%, in comparison with 10.5% of men; and the wage difference is 16.89%. Above all, women work in the service sector (85.2%), and 23.8% of them work part-time, with respect to 15.7% of men. "We ask state institutions and the Church, too, of which we are part, for the carrying out of effective policies of equality against women’s discrimination", pointed out JOC, which concluded: "As Christian men and women, we hope the constant and common work of so many men and women will end up changing social reality", in favour of real equality.
