JOHN PAUL II: MSGR. NYCZ (WARSAW), "A SAINT ON THE GROUND" NOT "ON A PEDESTAL"

"The cult of John Paul II is growing and developing also through numerous initiatives meant to delve into the teachings of the Pope. But devotion is also growing, together with prayer for the Pope’s intercession". However, "the fundamental question is not stopping" at cult, but continuing it with "concrete facts and actions; it is necessary to continue those deeds which the Pope took so much care of". Archbishop of Warsaw, Msgr. Kazimierz Nycz, spoke those words during an interview with SIR, on the occasion of the third anniversary of the death of Pope Wojtyla (2nd April 2005). "I think that John Paul II – went on the archbishop – was well aware that he was not proclaiming his teaching, by Christ’s one. He didn’t try to link the people with himself, but with the Church, and with Christ". A "pastor of the new evangelization", according to the bishop, to be regarded as a model, in particular, for his relationship with the young, "with whom, his attitude was not moralizing. However, he didn’t treat them indulgently, too. From the young, the Pope’s expectations were clear, and in spite of that, they went to see him in crowds". (To be continued)
