RUSSIA: MSGR. MENNINI ABOUT THE BAN KI-MOON MEETING, "COUNCIL FOR RELIGIONS" FOR DIALOGUE AND PEACE (3)

"As far as I am concerned – went on Nuncio Mennini, – I pointed out the interest of the Holy See, which is convinced of the importance of extending dialogue opportunities. As the Holy Father and Patriarch Alexius II stated almost in unison, the real problem of the current civilization, upset by enormous tragedies, is the lack of moral foundations. The objective of this Council for Religions, if it is established, will be that of helping governments and states to find out world ethic foundations again, shared by everybody; a sort of common platform from which we should start over for a more serene and fruitful dialogue". According to Msgr. Mennini, "a further positive element of the meeting was the homage" paid by Kirill "to the role constantly played by Benedict XVI to safeguard the Christian civilization, and to defend the rights and the dignity of the human person, on both the European and world level. As for Ban Ki-moon, while hinting at the imminent visit of the Holy Father to the United Nations (on 18th April – editor’s note), he declared that there are remarkable expectations from all countries".
