EU: BRUSSELS, THE EUROPEAN DISTRICT TURNS INTO AN "ECO-DISTRICT"

The European district of Brussels, where the main EU institutions are based (EU Commission, EU Council, EU Parliament), will soon undergo a makeover. The authorities of the Brussels-Capital Region have actually launched an international tender, in cooperation with the EU Executive, "to change the urban layout" of this large area of the Belgian capital. This area is the one around Rue de la Loi. "The purpose of the tender – explains the Commission in a note – is to find a very symbolic project with comfortable public areas, giving priority to pedestrian mobility and public transport, with architecturally outstanding and eco-friendly buildings". The EU Commission, at the end of the design and building process, will raise its spaces, mostly office space, from the current 170 thousand square metre to about 400 thousand square metres. "According to the plan, the district should become an eco-district", explain people from the Berlaymont, which looks just out onto Rue de la Loi, that will host the EU buildings, "several residential buildings and spaces for culture and entertainment".
