EU: DIAMANDOUROS (MEDIATOR), "CITIZENS AT THE CENTRE OF EUROPE’S INTEREST"

” “"A good governance means more than the mere abstention from illegal practices. The executives must serve the citizens and make sure they are appropriately treated and their rights are respected". Nikiforos Diamandouros, European mediator, presents in Brussels his "2007 Yearly Report" which outlines a summary of the cases of bad governance by the EU institutions and the complaints filed by the citizens, the businesses and the associations of the EU countries. Now, the report will have to be reviewed by Parliament in Strasbourg, Before discussing his work, the Greek jurist explains: "2007 was an important year for the citizens’ right to good governance. On December 12th, the Charter of Fundamental Rights was proclaimed" by the EU top executives. "Commitment to a legally binding Charter, as established by the Lisbon Treaty, reflects a growing awareness of the need to put the citizens at the centre of Europe’s interests – he explains –. From the Mediator’s perspective, the Charter is innovative in that it recognises for the very first time the right to good governance as one of the fundamental rights of the citizens". (continued)
