THE POPE IN THE USA: WHITE HOUSE, MAKING THE UN "MORE EFFECTIVE" THROUGH "GLOBAL SOLIDARITY"

"Encouraging the current efforts for making that institution an even more effective voice for the legitimate expectations of all the peoples of the world". This will be one of the "points" of the Pope’s much-awaited speech to the UN. It was stated today by Benedict XVI himself, in his speech at the White House. "For well over a century, the United States of America have played an important role in the international community", highlighted the Pontiff, according to whom, "on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the need for global solidarity is more urgent than ever, if we want everyone to live in an appropriate way for their dignity, as brothers and sisters living in the same house, around the table that God’s goodness has prepared for all His children". In particular, the Pope said he is "confident" that the typically American "concern for the wide human family" "will keep materialising in supporting the patient efforts of the international diplomacy for solving conflicts and promoting progress", so that "the future generations will be able to live in a world in which truth, freedom and justice may thrive – a world in which dignity and the rights bestowed by God to every man, woman and child will be kept into account, protected and effectively promoted".
