CONSUMERS: KUNEVA (COMMISSION), "CONFISCATION OF TOYS IN EUROPEAN MARKETS IS INCREASING"

Toys, first of all, but also electric appliances, motor vehicles, cosmetics, clothes: in 2007, the number of dangerous products withdrawn from the markets of the 27 member States increased by 53% with respect to 2006. It was stated in the annual report of the Commission concerning the quick alarm system (Rapex), submitted by Commissioner Meglena Kuneva. The report says: "An ever higher number of products is detected and destroyed before they may turn out to be harmful for European consumers. Public authorities are showing us to be up to their responsibilities in relation to the protection of consumers". The aim of the community security devices "is to assure us that citizens can buy anything they want peacefully, with no need to brick one’s brain to understand whether a product is dangerous or not". In the text, there is written that the measures taken in the last twelve months were 1,605: "This increase points out that the supervision skills of member States have been improving year after year". The "riskiest" products are toys, while the country of origin for one half of the confiscated goods is China.
