EU: "DEBATE EUROPE", THE EU COMMISSION REVIVES PLAN D (DEMOCRACY, DIALOGUE DEBATE)

Filling the gap between the EU institutions and the EU citizens; increasing the citizens’ participation in the decision-making process of the Union. The EU Commission revives, with this double aim, its Plan D (democracy, dialogue, debate) through the Debate Europe project, developed after the failure of the constitutional referendums in France and the Netherlands in 2005. Today in Brussels, the EU Executive submitted a report called "Debate Europe – Promoting the experience of Plan D", envisaging "a number of future campaigns to promote a wide and permanent debate about the future of the Union among citizens from all walks of life". Margot Wallstrom, deputy president and director of the communication strategy, states: "The EU policies have an impact on everyone’s life, for instance the roaming regulations for mobile phones or the free circulation of goods and people". Therefore, such policies "must be rooted in the national policies and the daily public debate". "They must be discussed and debated in the city halls, in the regional assemblies, the national parliaments, on TV or on the web". (continued)” “
