PARAGUAY: LUGO; MGR.GOGORZA (BISHOPS PRESIDENT) TO SIR, "CONFIDENT IN A GOOD RELATIONSHIP" (2)

Mgr. Gogorza says he still doesn’t know whether Lugo "will keep being a suspended bishop or if he will become something else, because this is the first time this has ever happened in the history of the Church". "Right now – he admits –, we are all a bit puzzled and we are waiting to know what the position of the Church should be". Over the next few days, the apostolic nuncio, mgr. Orlando Antonini, will go to Rome to discuss the matter with the Congregation of the Bishops, but it is the Pope who will have the final word. In answering a question whether the Paraguayan Bishops are united or divided in front of such new event, mgr. Gogorza says: "There’s no doubt mgr. Lugo is the legitimately elected president. We all agree, no one is against it. Now we only have to clarify his personal situation". Even between the Bishops Conference and the new president, he states, "there is no friction", not least because "there are signs that mgr. Lugo wants to keep being a Catholic and remain in the Church". While amongst the poor of Paraguay, he insists, right now "there’s a lot of hope. People are happy because after 60 years the government has changed. There’s the hope the country will be renewed and improved".
