BENEDICT XVI: APPEAL TO "STOP VIOLENCE" IN AFRICA

” “An appeal to the "local political authorities", to the "leaders of the international community" and "to every man of good will", not to forget "to do all they can to stop violence and meet their promises so as to lay peace and development on strong foundations". It was made by the Pope yesterday, at the end of the Regina Coeli. "The news that arrive from some African countries – began Benedict XVI – keep arousing deep grief and lively concern. I ask you not to forget such tragic events and the brothers and sisters who are involved in them! I ask you to pray for them and to become their voice!". Then the list of the plagues that are troubling Africa: "In Somalia, especially in Mogadishu, fierce armed conflicts are making more and more dramatic the humanitarian situation of that beloved population, for too many years oppressed by the weight of brutality and poverty. Darfur, despite some short-lived moments of relief, remains an endless tragedy for hundreds of thousands of people who are defenceless and left alone". Finally, Burundi: "After the bombings of the last few days that have hit and scared the population of the capital, Bujumbura, and even reached the premises of the Apostolic Nunciature, and confronted with the risk of a new civil war – was the Pope’s heart-felt exhortation –, I ask all the parties concerned to immediately resume the way of dialogue and reconciliation"
