EU PARLIAMENT: "A PROACTIVE ROLE OF THE CHURCHES IN THE FIGHT AGAINST DRUGS"

Society and religious communities are in the forefront of the fight against drugs in Europe. It is acknowledged by a report of the EU Parliament that will be submitted to the floor at the plenary session of 9 and 10 April. The report wants to urge the states to conduct information campaigns on the health risks, through a close partnership with the media, and asks for more public funds to be allocated to the associations working in this area. In addition, the report states that "the potential conversion of such crops into therapeutic uses" should be considered. In particular, the report "acknowledges the key role played by society" in support of the development and monitoring of drugs policies and highlights the "added value of its first-hand experience". In addition, it acknowledges that "the churches and the religious communities have played a proactive role in the fight against drugs and therefore their experience should be taken into account" when drawing up and implementing such policies. The report invites the member states to conduct information campaigns to explain "the risks and damages caused by the use of drugs on physical and mental health, especially in girls, pregnant or breast-feeding women and children".
