SPAIN: MGR. GONZALEZ MONTES (ALMERIA), "SUPPORTING MOTHERHOOD"

"Nowadays, billions of women are experiencing a frustrated motherhood in both the Western and Southern countries", writes mgr. Adolfo Gonzalez Montes, bishop of Almeria (Spain), in next Sunday’s pastoral letter. "Motherhood is endangered: in the Northern countries, it is fought against by hedonistic selfishness; in the Southern countries, hunger combined with population control schemes oppress motherhood and can exterminate whole populations". According to the prelate, the protection of the mother’s health "cannot become an excuse for a birth control which hides the lack of social justice in the distribution of wealth". In the West, mgr. Gonzalez Montes denounces "the frustration of motherhood in a permissive and violent society in which abortion is used as a method for the control of unplanned motherhood". The bishop adds that motherhood "is not just the woman’s concern but also the father’s right and duty; it is the task and call of both". "So – he concludes – the Social Doctrine of the Church is at all means in favour of the personal and social promotion of the woman, and also of increasing the husband’s involvement in motherhood".
