"In Spain, one cannot be a Christian and a Socialist at the same time": it was stated yesterday by mgr. Fernando Sebastian, emeritus archbishop of Pamplona, for many years the secretary and deputy president of the Spanish Bishops Conference, to the Christian University of Saint Paul-Ceu of Madrid. "What is happening with the family, abortion, the pro-euthanasia campaign and the school subject of Education to citizenship is not acceptable", adds the prelate, with reference to the initiatives taken by Zapatero’s Government. "The bishops must say it clearly". Mgr. Sebastián states that the future prospects of society "depend on the reaction of the Christians", who must be "less conformist" and find "their identity in a clear manner". In 1966, the prelate founded the magazine "Iglesia Viva", to bring the lesson of the Second Vatican Council in the Spanish Church, and published letters and documents on secularisation in Spain and the compromise of Catholics in politics.
