BENEDICT XVI: TO ISRAEL’S AMBASSADOR, "RIGHT TO SECURITY BUT ALLEVIATING THE PALESTINIANS’ SUFFERINGS"

"The Holy See recognises the legitimate security and self-defence of Israel and firmly condemns any forms of anti-Semitism. At the same time, it states that all peoples are entitled to the same opportunities to thrive". It was said by Benedict XVI, as he received today the new ambassador of Israel to the Holy See, Mordechay Lewy, for the submission of his credentials. "As a consequence – stated the Pope –, I exhort the government of Israel to make every effort to alleviate the hardships of the Palestinians, ensuring the freedom they need to take care of their own legitimate business, including going to the Holy Places, so that they can enjoy more peace and security. Clearly, these issues can only be dealt with within the broader context of the peace process in the Middle East". Hence the Pontiff’s hope that "the hopes and expectations deriving from the Annapolis summit will not be frustrated".
