INTER-RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE: EPC, "FAITHS, AN IMPORTANT INCLUSION FACTOR"

"Faith can be an important inclusion factor because religion is an essential part of the identity of many people". The European Policy Centre has drawn up a working document in the run-up to the meeting due to take place on Wednesday 14th May in Brussels about dialogue between religions. The event is one of the seven major events of 2008 as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The Epc report commissioned by the EU states: "A society marked by tensions between people of different faiths cannot work efficiently. Exchanges between people of different faiths are key to accomplishing social peace and cohesion, preventing conflicts and making sure all citizens’ talents are directed to the common goal of building a better community". The text (available on the website www.interculturaldialogue2008.eu) outlines the European scenario, pointing out the opportunities and success stories of dialogue as well as causes for concern. These include anti-Semitism and a rising anti-Islamic attitude following the Twin Towers attacks of September 2001 and the Madrid and London attacks of 2004 and 2005. (continued)
