MIGRATION: VÖCKING, IN EUROPE "THE SAME RIGHTS" AS THE RESIDENTS’

"All people who have migrated to an European country with a job contract must enjoy the same social and family rights as the residents. We must object to the enforcement of seasonal or temporary job contracts, as both only consider the workforce, not the psychological or educational aspects". This was said by father Hans Vöcking, secretary of the Commission for Migration of Ccee (Council of European bishops Conferences), as he spoke today at the Plenary Meting of the Papal Council for Migrants (until 15th) called "The migrant and travelling family". According to Vöcking, immigrant and refugee families "must be entitled to reunite with their families, when they sign a job contract. From this perspective – he explains –, we find it is not acceptable to keep differences between the social-economic groups that come from Europe and those that come from some other continent". According to the priest, the European society has become intercultural and multi-religious, from being a "continent of emigration" to a "place of immigration", where the number of women has substantially increased in the last 20 years. Such "feminisation" has given Europe "a new face". (continued)
