BENEDICT XVI: AUDIENCE, "WHEN WE TALK IN TRUTH, CONTROVERSIES DISAPPEAR" (2)

The Pseudo-Dyonisus Aeropagyte, according to the Pope, was "the great mediator of modern dialogue between Christianity and the mystic theologies of Asia" that speak of God "only in a negative way", and made "Greek philosophy meet the announcement of Saint Paul". At a "time of harsh controversies" and "deep anti-Christian thinking", Dyonisus "purged the Greek philosophy", showing that "the expression of true dialogue lies in looking for not the things that separate, but for the truth itself". At a time in which neo-Platonism used to be used "in an anti-Christian way", Dyonisus "dares to use this thinking to show the truth of Christ": thus he "turns the polytheistic universe into a cosmos created by God", full of "harmony", and "turns the polytheistic image repertoire into a praise of the Maker and His creature". The "fundamental" feature of his thinking, explained the Pope, is "first and foremost the cosmic praise: all of creation speaks of God, is a praise to God. His theology becomes a liturgical theology: God can be found by praising Him, by praying Him, not just by reflecting". In short, Dyonisus’ is "a cosmic, ecclesial, liturgical theology but also a deeply personal one. He created the first great mystic theology, which, with him, acquires a new meaning: it becomes more personal, more intimate, it expresses the walk of the soul towards God".
