MYANMAR: UNICEF, ONE MILLION CHILDREN MIGHT BE ENDANGERED

Out of the 2.5 million people affected by the Myanmar typhoon, one million children might be endangered. This was revealed by Unicef, which is working in the affected regions with over 70 assessment and rescue missions. "The destruction of houses, schools, waterworks and hygienic-sanitary facilities – states the UN Agency – is terribly dangerous for the life and health of the survivor children", who, 14 days after the typhoon, "are exposed to increasing risks of diseases and other consequences of the disaster: thousands of children are housed in temporary shelters, under torrential rain, and need immediate help". The assessment and rescue missions are handing out kits with basic survival aids, such as waterproof tarpaulins for emergency shelters, additives to make water drinkable, drugs, mosquito nets and cooking implements. A new flight should go there tomorrow to bring several tons of therapeutic foods for the treatment of malnourished children, while special "children-sized areas" have been set up in some places to provide the refugee children with protection, psycho-social support, medical and nutritional services. Unicef is working in close cooperation with the local Red Cross and other partner organisations.
