ABUSED WOMEN: IN THE MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES THEY ARE "VICTIMS TWICE"

In Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Turkey as well as in Spain and Italy, women living in a state of domestic conflict or abuse are "victims twice", because of decisions taken by men or laws and cultures that, instead of protecting them, discriminate them. This was revealed by a round table that took place in Rome yesterday at the Foreign pressroom, about "Women in a state of conflict", organised by the online magazine Babelmed.net (in French, English, Arab and soon in Italian too) founded in Rome to provide "different, more complex and deeper information" about Mediterranean cultures, through a network of reporters in many countries. This will be covered more widely by SirEuropa (old.agensir.it). In Lebanon, for instance, "women suffer a war that men have wanted and they are neglected by all policies – stated Sahar Al-Attar, a journalist for the daily paper L’Orient Le Jour -. So they are victims twice". In Algeria, ten years of civil war have left deep wounds, especially on the women who have been raped and have had children from such rapes. "Until the Nineties, they were not considered war victims – said Ghania Khelifi, of the Algerian daily paper Le Midi -. The religious authorities had to consult foreign religious leaders to decide if they could grant them the status of war victims and declare these women innocent". (continued)
