Against the boycotting of the Olympic Games of Peking 2008 and "concern about the excessive, steady politicisation of the Olympic Games". The Culture and Education Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe speaks from Paris about the controversy that is surrounding the sporting event of next summer. The Commission instead expresses the need to reassert the eminent sporting spirit of the event that has always been synonym with peace. "The athletes work hard for years in the run-up to the Olympic Games which for many of them are the peak of their careers". Therefore it would be "unfair to leave those who pursue non-sporting objectives take hold of the Olympic Games, frustrating the Olympic dreams of the athletes". In addition, according to the CoE Commission, the Peking Olympic Games will be an opportunity to draw attention to China and "could be a good chance to extend dialogue" between the international community and the Asian country.
