CLUSTER BOMBS: TOMASI (HOLY SEE), "A SECURITY BASED ON WEAPONS ONLY IS A DELUSION"

"A security that relies only on weapons and the power of force is ephemeral and deceitful. Cluster bombs are a case in point": this was stated by archbishop Silvano M.Tomasi, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations and other international organisations in Geneva, in his speech – revealed today by the Newsroom – at the Dublin Conference on cluster bombs which opened on May 19th (lasting two weeks) with delegates from about 100 countries. The purpose is to eventually ban these weapons, which are some of the deadliest weapons ever for their effects on civilians, which last years after the end of a war. "It’s true, a country is entitled to defend the peace, security and stability of the people who are under their responsibility – said mgr. Tomasi -. But this goal can be achieved more easily without rushing to armaments and war". Peace, he highlighted – also includes "human rights, development, social and political participations, justice and cooperation". Even the "so-called victories – he stated – become long-term defeats for civilians": "Decades after using cluster bombs, peace still carries a bitter memory, with thousands of victims, stifled socio-economic development, a waste of human and financial resources".
