The NPOs and other entities which are going to meet in Rome in the next few days are highly committed to the defence of the people’s right to feed in a sustainable way. A press conference presenting "Terra Preta" is scheduled in Rome today (at 1 pm), at the European Commission’s representation in Italy. Among other people, the general manager of FAO, Jacques Diouf, will take part in the opening ceremony on 1st June. The Italian mobilization will end in Milan on 7th June, with the "March for the Climate", set up by Legambiente. Yesterday afternoon, still in Rome, on the subject of food crisis, there was a seminary on the agricultural policies between Europe and Africa, set up on the occasion of the "EuropAfrica-Farmland" Campaign. "Africa can feed Africa and Europe can feed Europe stated the organizers -. Africa owns the necessary resources to be self-sufficient, since family agriculture generates over 90% of agricultural production, employs over 60% of the population, and manages over 95% of agricultural soil. One half of the population in the 27 EU member states lives in rural areas, too, that is, in 90% of the territory". Therefore, this is the reason for the invitation "to strengthen agricultural policies which may stimulate the improvement of the economic system, of the living conditions of the populations, and the defence of the family model of agriculture, both from the social and environmental point of view".
