BENEDICT XVI: AUDIENCE, APPEAL FOR MYANMAR

"Opening one’s heart to mercy and generosity so that, with the help of all those who can and wish to give rescue, the suffering caused by such a huge tragedy may be alleviated". This is the appeal to solidarity for Myanmar, which was hit in the last few days by the "Nargis" typhoon – which caused so far 22,500 victims and 41 thousand missing people –, made to "everybody" by the Pope at the end of today’s general audience before the greeting to the devotees in Italian. "I join the cry for pain and help of the beloved population of Myanmar – began Benedict XVI –, who saw so many lives, as well as goods and means of subsistence, suddenly destroyed by the terrible violence of Nargis typhoon". "As I ensured in the message of solidarity sent to the president of the Bishops Conference – went on Benedict XVI –, I am spiritually close to the people affected". Amidst his greetings in English, a novelty: the Pope gave a "warm greeting" to the devotees of Quatar. "I am very glad – said Benedict XVI – to greet the pilgrims of the Church of ‘Our Lady of the Rosary’ in Quatar". Their Church, the first in the country which has a Muslim majority, was unveiled less than two months ago, on March 14th.
