"Europe’s Day is for the European institutions an opportunity to show their human face and for the citizens to look at Europe as at something that concerns them closely". Margot Wallstrom, deputy president of the EU Commission, speaks about the Feast of the European Union which is going to be celebrated today: on May 9th 1950, the then Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, Robert Schuman, made a "Declaration" that lay the foundations for the political integration process. So over 500 events will be held today in all member states. The main theme of the events will be intercultural dialogue, traditions and specificities of the continent, as a tribute to 2008 as the Year of Intercultural Dialogue. All the EU premises in the capitals and the main cities of the EU, as well as the Europe Direct information centres, will host events, meetings, concerts, school visits. Of such events, Wallstrom mentions the outdoors concert in Constitution Square in Athens, "on climate change and the environment, with international and Greek singers and musicians". (continued)
