"No shocks Europe": the digital version of the daily "The Irish Independent" gives us the first comment on the negative result of the referendum for ratifying the Lisbon Treaty. According to this newspaper, Premier Brian Cowen will find himself in an awkward position during next week’s European Union Council in Brussels, and will have to explain his colleagues, heads of State and government, the decision taken by the electors of his country. According to "The Independent", the "political establishment finds itself in an embarrassing position", owing to the voting failure. In the meantime, the gap between the two positions is getting clearer: with the results from one half of the counties, "no" equals 53.5% and "yes" 46.5%. The French daily "Le Figaro" just says: "No is to the advantage of Ireland". The referendum in the green island, with the missed ratification of the Treaty, opens also the press agencies and the online editions of Portuguese, Polish, Slovenian and German newspapers. "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" confirms: "Ireland shocks Europe".
