CHRISTIANS AND ISLAM: THE MEETING OF THE "OASIS" CENTRE IN AMMAN

The annual meeting of the scientific committee of the International Study and Research Centre "Oasis" of the Venice patriarchate is taking place in Amman (Jordan) on 23rd and 24th June. Born in 2003, "through the network of its links and instruments (paper magazine, website, series of books and newsletter)", said a spokesman of the diocese, it intends "to be the connecting element between the Christians in the countries with Muslim majorities and the Christians in the West", going "through mutual account". The subject of the Committee is religious freedom as “serious case” of the freedom-truth relationship. “Jordan is a 97% Muslim country. However, the Christian minority is positive in there, on the whole, though with some shadows", said the Patriarch of Venice, Cardinal Angelo Scola, in an interview for the June newsletter of Oasis. A country "with scarce raw materials", but with a pretty good life standard, pointed out the Patriarch, "which, in many respects, is the living evidence of what the Middle East might be if it gave up the logic of mutual contraposition and started following the path of moderation. In this respect, the contributions which the different members of the royal family are paying to both Intermuslim dialogue and Islam-Christian dialogue are universally acknowledged and appreciated”.
