SPAIN: FAMILY FORUM, NO TO FREE DISTRIBUTION OF MORNING-AFTER PILL

” “No to free distribution of the "morning-after pill" in outpatients’ clinics by different Spanish autonomist governments: the Spanish Family Forum affirmed that yesterday, through a note. By means of this decision by some Autonomies, such as the Basque Country, stated the Forum, they expect to "present the morning-after pill as a contraceptive which would not affect the embryo’s right to life". This medicine, recalled the president of the Forum, Benigno Blanco, "may have inhibiting effects on ovulation, but may also destroy a human embryo already existing in the period going from fecundation to nesting in the uterus". "In Spain – denounced the Spanish Family Forum –, there has been a certain campaign going on, recently, and the Spanish public opinion tends to promote liberalization in the use of the morning-after pill, to make it more accessible to the young", but such campaign includes "wrong information on the abortive effects of this kind of medicines", because it is based on the principle that "only the product or mechanism affecting the human embryo after its nesting in the uterus is abortive". The Forum regards the growing consumption of the abortive medicine Ru486 by girls as alarming.
