Today and on the next few days, the Argentine Catholic Church has asked the devotees to organise ecumenical and inter-religious Masses and prayers for "social peace". For about three months, Argentine has been experiencing a new economic crisis, caused by the conflict between the farmers and the government. The latter wants to increase export duties, which would hugely damage small- and medium-size producers. The reaction of farmers and haulers has caused roadblocks, suspension of supplies, empty supermarkets. And just today president Cristina Fernandez announced she wants to entrust Congress with the ratification of the soy tax, which would make the farmers happy as they hope Parliament will not approve. The Church has taken action in the dioceses: today Paranà has launched one day of fasting and ecumenical and inter-religious prayer to "ask for a quick solution to the conflict" so that "our leaders and rulers may wisely and prudently work towards justice, reconciliation and social peace". Tomorrow, Gualeguaychù will host an inter-religious vigil in front of the Town Hall, asking people to bring candles and Argentine flags, but "no saucepans or offensive signs". Other similar initiatives will be held in Rio Cuarto, Catamarca, San Nicolàs, Santa Fe and Puerto Iguazù.” ” ” “
