EU SUMMIT: "NO" TO RENEGOTIATING THE TREATY OF LISBON, DOOR OPEN FOR THE BALKANS

The document with the conclusions of the EU summit includes 24 pages. The first chapter is devoted to the process of ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon. It is followed by the chapters on justice and security, price levels, Western Balkans. The "external relation" item includes a few paragraphs on the Objectives for the Millennium, the Euro-Mediterranean policy, the situation in Cuba. In this respect, the Slovenian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dimitrij Rupel, stated: "We sent an encouraging message to Cuba", by revoking the sanctions in force until now, "but we shall make sure there will be a real transition process going on". As for the Balkans, added Rupel, "the European Union confirmed its open door": in the document with the conclusions, the questions of "keeping stability in Kosovo" and the process of approaching Brussels by Croatia and Macedonia are tackled. At the end of the meeting of the 27 member States, all the leaders commented its results. The French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, the next president of the European Union, explained that "the ratifications of the Treaty of Lisbon should go on", while he excluded any chances to renegotiate the text.
