The EU summit in Brussels, ending in the afternoon with a meaningful delay with respect to expectations, confirmed the positions emerged in the last few days. "We took note of the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty by Ireland", explained Slovenian Premier Janez Jansa, who concluded the European Union presidency of its country with the summit. "We respect such democratic decision, but at the same time, it was decided to go on with the ratification process in the other seven countries which haven’t concluded it, yet". Excluding any hypothesis of renegotiating the Treaty, on the other hand, the 27 heads of State and government decided that "more time is necessary for institutional matters", and thus, they will talk about them again at the extraordinary summit on 15th October, under the French presidency. "At the same time added Jansa , we reached an agreement on the fact that it is necessary to go on, together, to tackle the concrete problems citizens are interested in. As a matter of fact, several operating decisions were taken during the meeting in these two days". Still in relation to the Treaty, they agreed that the Czech Republic would take care to ratify it "only after the pronunciation of the Constitutional Court on its compatibleness" with the national juridical framework.
