RELIGIOUS FREEDOM: LOBKOWICZ, "THE CHURCH DOES NOT WANT POWER, BUT REACHING PEOPLE’S HEARTS"

"Any day, I expect in some Western country a legal petition against the Roman Church will be granted for not admitting a homosexual or a woman to priesthood". This challenging statement was made by Nikolaus Lobkowicz of the Catholic University of Eichstatt, Germany, who spoke today at the Scientific Committee of the International Study and Research Centre Oasis, which is under way in Amman, Jordan (until 24th). Speaking of religious freedom, the subject of the meeting, the expert explained that "the human right to religious freedom increasingly risks coming into conflict with other human rights, especially the right to equality and the right not to be discriminated against for some allegedly irrelevant reason". In other words, he stated, "one of the problems of the modern Western countries is the outcry of some tiny rancorous communities claiming their space". More generally, "religious freedom is considered a fundamental human right insofar as it does not openly upset public order, as defined by the Constitution" of a country.
