INTER-RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE: PLENARY ASSEMBLY IN THE VATICAN, "GUIDELINES" ON DIALOGUE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The Papal Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue is working at developing a document which should contain some "Guidelines" to help Catholics and more generally all Christians to "relate with people and communities of different religions in truth and love". This is the main task that the Plenary Assembly of the Vatican Ministry set out for itself; the assembly opened today with a speech by the president, cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran. "After many years of hesitation about the expediency of such document – said the cardinal –, it seems the time has come to support the pastors and devotees with some general guidance that will be obviously adapted to the local situations. We might take inspiration from the ten Commandments, which are a sort of universal grammar which all believers can use in their relation with God and with all their neighbours". "However, it is important – added Tauran – that our pastoral work for our Catholic brothers and sisters will prepare them to be ready to share their spiritual beliefs and consider those of others. They must understand that all believers have a common heritage: faith in the only God, the sacredness of life, the need for brotherhood, the experience of prayer which is the language of religion". ” “
