” “"We want to insist that forced prostitution and the trade of women are unacceptable forms of abuse, and everyone has a duty to take action against this form of exploitation". Anna Zaborska, a Slovakian MEP, chairs the commission for women’s rights at the EU Parliament. In the run-up to the Euro2008 Football Cup, she gives the alarm again against prostitution, as it had happened during the 2008 World Football Championship. "No one wants to upset a sporting event, and no one is accusing Austria or Switzerland", the two organisers of the championship. "This is about defending people who will be abused and exploited", insists Zaborska, supported by her colleagues Christa Prets (Austria) and Lissy Groner (Germany). The issue has been addressed by the plenary meeting in Brussels (4-5 June) in a verbal question that asked the EU what measures had been taken to "fight the trade aimed at sexual exploitation" which is covered by a specific EU "action plan". The MEPs also ask for initiatives to raise public awareness and to "encourage across-borders police cooperation". (continued)
