BENEDICT XVI: "FIGHTING POVERTY", THE SUBJECT OF THE MESSAGE FOR 2009 PEACE DAY” “” ” ” “

” ” Benedict XVI’s message for the 42nd World Peace Day (January 1st 2009) will be named: “Fighting poverty, building peace". The subject chosen by the Pope, according to the short note published today by the newsroom of the Holy See, aims at "highlighting the need of an urgent response from the human family to the serious problem of poverty, not only as a material problem but first of all as a moral and spiritual problem".” “In his message of 2nd June to FAO, Benedict XVI wrote: "how can one remain indifferent to the appeals of those who, in each continent, do not have enough food to live? Poverty and malnutrition are not a mere fatality, caused by adverse environmental conditions or disastrous natural catastrophes –. Purely technical or economic considerations must not prevail over the duty of justice towards all those who are starving".” “"The outrage of poverty – states the note – shows the inadequacy of the current system of human cohabitation in promoting the accomplishment of the common good" and consequently "there’s the need of a reflection on the deep roots of material poverty, and therefore also on spiritual poverty, which makes man indifferent to the sufferings of his neighbours. Then, the response must be found first and foremost in the conversion of man’s heart to the God of love".
