FRANCE: THE DEATH OF JEAN GÉLAMUR (BAYARD PRESSE), A GREAT SUPPORTER OF THE CATHOLIC PRESS

"A true communicator, one could feel behind this exceptional quality the Christian who cares for the others and the Spirit that works in everyone". With these words, François Régis Hutin of "Ouest-France" recalls the former president of Bayard Presse, Jean Gélamur, who died on Wednesday 9th July (funerals to be held today) to whom the Catholic daily paper "La Croix" devoteD one page in yesterday’s issue, Thursday 10th July. Jean Gélamur, who was an engineer, in 1958 became a director of "Bonne Presse", where he stayed 25 years. Then he was appointed president of the supervisory board where he remained until 1991. In that period, he was faithful to the Congregation of the Augustinians of the Assumption, the owners of "Bonne Presse", and became friend with many priests. "At the time – tells "La Croix" –, he did not known about their publications. He simply responded to their challenges". But he learnt about the role of the Catholic press in the social and spiritual education of people, the relation with the readership, the importance of such papers as "La Croix", which he directed. He gave unity to the Bayard group and changed its identity: in 1969 "Bonne Presse" changed its name to "Bayard Presse". (continued)
