(From our correspondents in Australia) They come not only from the USA, Brazil and China, but also from little islands of which little is spoken. Youth from every part of the world are arriving in Australia for WYD in Sydney (15-20 July). That’s the case of the pilgrims from the French island of Réunion in the Mascarene archipelago to the east of Madagascar, and from Barbados. countries in which Catholics form a tiny minority. Veronica, 24 years old, from the island of Réunion, recounts that for her "it’s been tough; I’ve had to work seven days a week to be able to afford this journey. My group, 92 in all, has been preparing for this event for a whole year". "We have come all this way because WYD is a wonderful opportunity for us to meet other youngsters", says Mary from Barbados, a former British colony. She and her group (twenty in all) arrived in Melbourne, for the Days in the Dioceses, last Wednesday: in their little island there’s only one diocese and Catholics are only 3 percent of the population.
