ECUMENISM: MGR. GIORDANO (CCEE), ONE YEAR AFTER SIBIU "PROBLEMS ADDRESSED IN SINCERITY"

At the Third Ecumenical Assembly in Sibiu, problems "were not hidden" but "addressed with honesty and sincerity". And while this "gave some grief", it "also proved that nowadays the Christians of Europe can speak of their problems as well". This is the final assessment of "Sibiu 2007", which mgr. Aldo Giordano, secretary general of the Council of European bishops Conferences, draws just after the meeting that the two delegations, that of Ccee and that of Kek, had in Romania last Saturday. "Sibiu – says Giordano – was an important event, mainly because it did take place", thus proving that "Christians can meet and can also discuss the big issues that are at the heart of Europe". ” “On the other hand – goes on Giordano –, "the Sibiu Assembly also brought to light the typical problems of current ecumenism. Such as the problem of identity, the challenge of modernity and the crisis of the values. It also showed that the Churches do not have a shared view of the unity of the Church". But, according to the Ccee leader, this paves the way to the future process: "The Assembly in Sibiu was a serious meeting, and perhaps this shows that the time has come to go deeper into the ecumenical issues, the big issues of man, the ethical and moral problems, because Europe must rediscover Christianity".” “
