The solidarity contribution, which was also paid by 750 young Austrians taking part in WYD, has allowed an historical trip to happen: for the first time since the peace treaty was signed in Sudan, a group of 44 kids coming from all the nation’s dioceses both from the Christian South and the Muslim North will be able to attend the meeting with the Pope. The Austrian youngsters, together with young people from other countries, have joined the initiative organized by the "Kirche in Not" charity foundation, in which an extra 10 Euros had to be paid to fund the trip to Sydney for the Sudanese kids. "It is the first time in the history of the Sudanese Church that we have a delegation of kids coming from all over the country, representing all Catholic dioceses, Celetino Prevedello stated, the combonian missionary who is acting as WYD coordinator for Sudan. Almost 4 million Catholics live in this country, about 15% of the entire population. During the days in the dioceses, these young Africans met some of their compatriots, whose families had fled the country during the civil war and then settled in Australia. The Archbishop of Kharthoum, Card. Gabriel Zubeir Wako, is also in Sydney and will celebrate Mass with the Sudanese community at the end of WYD.
