WYD IN SYDNEY: ITALY, THE RECURRENT THEME IN SYDNEY’S CATECHESES

(From our correspondents in Sydney) – This morning saw the beginning, in Sydney, of the catecheses which will guide young pilgrims towards their meeting with Benedict XVI, on Saturday and Sunday in Randwich. "The Holy Spirit and the Mission" is the common theme which will be tackled in the three events scheduled for Italian pilgrims, who will be subdivided into 18 groups, which will be followed by an equal number of bishops. The main topic will be the Pope’s message to young people for the 2008 WYD. Every day, this topic will be addressed from three different standpoints, however: "Called upon to live in the Holy Spirit" on Wednesday, "The Holy Spirit, soul of the Church" on Thursday and "Sent in the world: the Holy Spirit as our mission’s protagonist" on Friday. "Discovering the beauty of baptized people’s vocation and Christian life, which means welcoming the Holy Spirit and letting Him guide us" is the aim of the first catechesis, which should urge young people to achieve a personal encounter with Christ. Tomorrow, instead, young people will be helped to "discover the Church, Body of Christ, living organism, animated and enriched by the Holy Spirit’s manifold gifts and charisms", while on Friday the aim will be to "realize that, in our Christian vocation, we can never separate the call to holiness from the call to mission".
