SYDNEY 2008: GERMANY, "WYD CAMPS" FOR THOSE WHO STAYED AT HOME

About 6,000 young Germans are taking part in the WYD in Sydney. For those who have stayed at home, most dioceses have organised several programs: the Pope’s images are broadcast on large screens, and side events are held. The largest "WYD camp" has been set up by the archdiocese of Cologne in Odenthal-Altenberg and can accommodate up to 2,000 people. "I’m not sad that I didn’t go to Australia", said Christian Linker, president of the Federation of young Catholic Germans (Bdkj) of Cologne, to the German Catholic press agency Kna. "We can’t and we won’t repeat the big WYD in Altenberg", added Johannes Meißner, in charge of the camp. "But we want to offer the young people who could not go to Australia a place in which they could take part in it with many other young people". The camp is the result of the joint efforts of the youth pastoral of the archdiocese, the Bdkj, the school pastoral and the association Jugend 2000. The events include a Way of the Cross to coincide with that of Sydney and the Vigil on the night of 19th July. As to the final celebration, the young people who have stayed in Germany will be able to see a summary of the Sydney vigil, then – at night, because of the different time zone –, Mass will be officiated to coincide with that of Sydney. ” ” ” “
