Young Cubans are following WYD on the sly and at a distance, from a semi-hidden link on the site of the Cuban Bishops’ Conference, typical of local ecclesial caution. The Brazilians of the archdiocese of Sao Paulo are organizing a vigil in the city in tandem with the one with the Pope in Sydney on 19 July. The 370 youngsters from Chile in Australia describe their experiences among their emigrant compatriots every day on the blog of the Chilean Church. But the South American country with the largest contingent is Colombia: no less than 650 of them. These are just some of the examples of the participation of youth from Latin America in WYD. Those who were unable to travel to Australia can follow the event at a distance, especially on the web. A group of 60 youngsters also left from Uruguay, 50 from Peru, in all a thousand from Latin America as a whole. In Brazil, in the parish of St. Cecilia in Sao Paulo, the auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese will preside over a vigil coinciding with the one in Sydney on Saturday 19 July. "Even without travelling to Australia writes Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer, Archbishop of Sao Paulo in his invitation to participate our youth will be able to unite themselves with the hundreds of thousands of other youth from all over the world gathered in Sydney". Most of the Bishops’ Conferences host on line the link to the WYD official site translated into Spanish.
