WYD IN SYDNEY: MONS. SPITERIS’S CATECHESIS (GREECE), TESTIMONY OF "JOYFUL COMMUNION"

(From our correspondents in Sydney) – To give a testimony "of joyful communion". This is the urging that the Archbishop of Corfu, Mons. Ioannis Spiteris, addressed to Greek-speaking youths during WYD catecheses, asking them give their testimony so that "secularized men might understand that life in Christ allows us to overcome selfishness and self-absorption". Secularized man "experiences his everyday life closed in his own individual self, using everything instrumentally for his own profit", but with this behaviour "he also destroys his relations with other people and nature". "Young people gathered here – he explained – with their truly Catholic, and therefore universal, presence, show that they are able to overcome those selfish ways of life, living in brotherhood and mutual giving". Events such as WYD, he later told Sir at the end of his catechesis, "are energizing moments, especially for those, like ourselves, who live as a minority". You should not expect "immediate conversions, but for sure this kind of celebrations are quite helpful in our life of faith, allowing the Holy Spirit to work in the deepest recesses of our hearts later on".
